Retrofit Double Glazing for Your Existing Timber Windows

If the heater runs all day and the house still isn’t warm, it’s not the heater. It’s the glass.

Macedon Ranges Glass fits genuine high-performance double glazed units into the timber windows you already have: no new frames, no builders, no plasterers, no painters, and roughly one-third the price of full window replacement. We’ve been double glazing homes across the Macedon Ranges and Melbourne since 1970, custom made in our own New Gisborne location.

A real person answers, 9-5 Monday to Friday – retrofit enquiries answered within 24 hours. Timber-framed windows only. We can’t retrofit aluminium frames or double-hung sash windows, and we’d rather tell you now than waste your time with a quote. Not sure what you have? Phone us and we’ll advise you.

What Is Retrofit Double Glazing?

Retrofit double glazing means replacing the glass in your existing timber frames, not replacing the windows themselves. We remove the old single pane from your timber window and fit a genuine high-performance double glazed unit in its place. Your frames, your architraves, your paintwork and the character of your home all stay exactly as they are.

The work is quick and unobtrusive, and the only noticeable change will be the increased comfort. This is not an add-on or secondary system (no acrylic overlays or magnetic panels). It’s real double glazing, custom made for your windows and fitted by our own tradesmen.

A word of caution when you’re comparing quotes: some companies use “retrofit” to describe pulling out your entire window and fitting a new one. That’s full window replacement, which is a different job, at roughly three times the price, involving builders, plasterers and painters. When we say retrofit, we mean your existing timber frames stay put.

Which Windows Can Be Double Glazed?

If your windows are timber-framed, the answer is almost certainly yes. The glass sits in a timber rebate we re-glaze, so your frames stay exactly where they are.

The homes best suited to retrofit were built from the 1970s to the early 2000s with timber frames and sufficient rebate depth. If you’re not sure what you have, send a couple of photos with your enquiry. We’ll tell you quickly whether your windows qualify, and if they don’t, we’ll tell you that too.

How Much Does Retrofit Double Glazing Cost?

Every home is different, but here’s the reliable rule of thumb: retrofitting double glazed units into your existing timber frames costs roughly one-third of what full window replacement does.

We’re openly the premium glazier in the district, and here’s what that buys you: toughened safety glass on both panes as standard, a 10-year warranty on every unit, and a company that’s been up the road since 1970 and the one that will still be here when your warranty matters.

Why Double Glaze Your Existing Timber Windows?

Heat is lost – and gained – through glass. Here’s what stopping that does for a Macedon Ranges home.

70%

less heat loss through your windows in winter

77%

of outside heat blocked from entering in summer

Up-to figures for double glazing. Winter is the reason people call around here.

A genuinely warmer home in winter. Heat stays in, where it belongs.

Lower heating bills, because the warmth you pay for stops leaking through the glass.

Dramatically reduced condensation on the glass.

A quieter, calmer home. Double glazing brings the added bonus of noise reduction.

Toughened safety glass on both panes discourages intruders and adds peace of mind.

Less need for heavy, view-blocking curtains and pelmets.

Enhanced resale value on an established home.

Keeps summer heat out too – though around here, winter is the reason people call.

Lower energy use and emissions, without changing how you live.

BIG PANES, BIG HEAT LOSERS

Double Glazed Sliding Doors and French Doors

Timber sliding doors and French doors are some of the biggest heat-losers in a Macedon Ranges home: large panes of old single glazing, right where you sit in the evening.

We retrofit high-performance double glazed units into existing timber sliding doors and French doors using the same method as your windows: the frames and doors stay, the glass is upgraded, and toughened safety glass on both panes comes standard on every unit.

★★★★★

“I could not fault any aspect of doing business with this company. Polite, friendly, efficient staff and tradies. We had our whole house refitted with double-glazed windows. The old colonial panes were removed and new large panes installed all in one day by a fun, motivated team of 4. We thought we were fully impressed with our new windows until a team was sent to clean them!!

Wow!! We cannot believe the transformation, quality and new look we can now enjoy. Looking forward to further business with Macedon Ranges Glass when we’re ready to replace our old shower glass, and choose splashbacks for our new kitchen and laundry.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you double glaze existing windows without replacing the frames?

Yes. That’s exactly what retrofit double glazing is. We remove the old glass from your existing timber frames and fit genuine high-performance double glazed units in its place: Low-E coating, argon gas fill, and toughened safety glass on both panes as standard. No new frames, no builders, no plasterers, no painters, and roughly one-third the price of full window replacement.

No, and we’d rather tell you now than waste your time with a quote. Retrofit double glazing only works on timber-framed windows, because the glass sits in a timber rebate we can re-glaze. If your frames are aluminium, your options are full window replacement (a different service, which we don’t provide) or secondary glazing products. If you’re not sure what you have, call (03) 5428 2899 and we’ll advise you.

Timber-framed fixed panels, casement, awning and sliding windows, bay windows (unless fitted with double-hung sashes), French doors and sliding doors can all be retrofitted. Double-hung / vertical sliding sash windows can’t be, and neither can aluminium frames. Lead light panels can usually be removed and replaced with double glazed units where the rebate depth allows.

Every home is different, but the reliable rule of thumb is that retrofitting costs roughly one-third of full window replacement. A typical house has 10-12 windows (30-40 individual units), and most homes are completed in a day or two. Call us for a quote – retrofit enquiries are answered within 24 hours.

Most homes are completed in a day or two by our own crew. We watch the weather during every install, and no window is ever left out overnight if rain threatens. If the forecast turns, we plan the day’s work around it.

Our 10-year warranty covers every double glazed unit we manufacture and install. We don’t warrant 30-50-year-old timber frames (no honest glazier can) but we do replace all timber glazing beads as standard and repair minor sill rot on-site as part of the job.
