How We Install a Dog Door in a Glass Door

Here’s the straight answer most people don’t get from Google: you can’t cut a hole in your existing glass door. Toughened glass can’t be cut after it’s been toughened (it shatters), and cutting into old 3mm glass is unsafe and against Australian Standard AS 1288.

So we do it properly. We replace the whole glass panel with new toughened safety glass that has the pet door built in during manufacture. The result is a dog door in glass that’s stronger and safer than the panel it replaced – made to size for your door, fitted by our own glaziers, and compliant with the Australian Standard.

The pet doors themselves are quality acrylic units, available in one size for cats and small and medium sizes for dogs. We’ll help you choose the right one.

Good to know: holes are never cut into existing glass – it can’t be done safely. Every pet door we fit is a brand-new panel, made to size and compliant with AS 1288.

How the Panel Swap Works

Your door keeps working exactly as it did – we change the glass, not the door.

We measure your panel.

Ring us with your door measurements, or send a photo with your enquiry, and we'll tell you what's involved. Most jobs are quoted on the spot.

We make the new panel.

Your new toughened safety glass panel is custom made to size in our New Gisborne showroom, with the dog or cat door incorporated during manufacture.

We swap it over.

Once the panel is made, the swap-over is typically done in a single visit. Your sliding door slides exactly as before - your pet just stops asking you to operate it.

Dog Doors for Sliding Glass Doors & Patio Doors

The most common pet door job we do is a dog door for a sliding glass door. Whether you call it a doggy door or a patio door with a dog door built in, the method is the same: we measure your existing panel, manufacture a new toughened glass panel with the pet door incorporated, and swap it over. Your sliding door slides exactly as it did before. Your dog just stops asking you to operate it.

A pet door for a sliding glass door doesn’t affect how the door locks or tracks, and because the new panel is toughened safety glass, it’s a genuine upgrade on the original glass in most older doors.

Cat Doors in Glass Doors

Everything above goes for cats too. A cat door for a sliding glass door or hinged glass door uses the same panel-replacement method: a new toughened panel with a compact cat door in glass, sized so the cat gets through and the neighbourhood dogs don’t.

Most cat door units include lockable or four-way settings (in only, out only, both, or locked), so you stay in charge of the comings and goings. If you’re not sure whether a cat door for a sliding door or a small dog door is the better fit for your pet, simply call us and we’ll advise you.

Pet Doors in Double Glazed Doors: Yes, It Can Be Done

It’s the most common misconception we hear. You can put a pet door in double glazing, and we do it regularly.

A dog door in double glazing works the same way as single glazing: we manufacture a new double glazed unit with the pet door built in and replace the existing panel. Same for a cat door in double glazing. You keep the warmth and quiet of your double glazed door, and your pet gets their own entrance. Quality pet door units seal well, so you’re not trading your winter warmth for your pet’s independence.

Pet Door Questions, Answered Straight

Can you put a dog door in a glass door?

Yes. We replace the glass panel with new toughened safety glass that has the dog door built in. Holes are never cut into existing glass – it can’t be done safely.

Yes. It’s a common misconception that you can’t. We manufacture a new double glazed unit with the pet door incorporated and swap it in.

Often, yes. If the window has a fixed glass panel large enough for the pet door with sensible clearances, the same method applies: we replace that pane with a new toughened panel incorporating a cat door for the window or a small window dog door. Low fixed panels beside doors are the usual candidates. Phone us or send us a photo with your enquiry and we’ll tell you whether yours is suitable.

Once your panel is manufactured, the swap-over is typically done in a single visit. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when we quote.

The new panel is toughened safety glass, stronger than the original glass in most older doors, and the door’s existing lock is unaffected. Most pet door units can also be locked or blanked off.
